Peeples: From time to time Mack sends some whistles to James Peeples at flutesite.com to have a look at. James is an
accomplished player of both flutes and whistles. James has recorded some sound clips and
has kindly allowed us to link to them here. Many thanks to James. Please visit his web
site as well as it contains a wealth of information.
- April 2005 - The first is a tune I wrote, a
double-jig called "The Pewter Plug," played on the B-flat whitecap on a
Generation tube:
-
- April 2005 - The second is a favorite reel of
mine, Paddy Rafferty's Favorite, played on that lovely high D whitecap. Also this uses
that C-natural thumbhole
to good effect:
April 2004 - This is the Flogging
Reel...really nice reel, really horrible name, I've never heard the story of why that tune
is named that. This is on the B-flat. This whistle is excellent in every way...you really
hit nice balances on every aspect on this one. I hope you enjoy the tune! http://www.flutesite.com/samples/flogging_hoovbb.mp3
April 2004 - This
is Richard Dwyer's, played on the Whitecap on a 2-piece Clare body, the whistle you said
was your favorite. I understand why: it's smooth, lovely, got some bite, and is very easy
and fun to just play. It's the kind of whistle that always seems to beg you to play just
one more tune on it, please mister, just one more. http://www.flutesite.com/samples/dwyers_hoovclare.mp3
April 2004 - This
is an air I wrote, followed by a reel. This is the delrin head on the Oak body. This is a
very capable whistle, and I enjoy playing it. The sound of this whistle is so different
from any other I've played I have to take a few minutes and "get used to it"
before I really start enjoying it. That's not a knock against the whistle, though--it's
really good work. http://www.flutesite.com/samples/despair_achillsound_delrinhoov.mp3
- April 2004 - Here's the
air "Aisling Gheal" on your brass C whistle:
- I really like this whistle! It is visually striking, and has a
pure, sweet tone that never gets shrill. It's soft and lends itself to a melancholy sound
for airs, but also is responsive and it's fun to play dance music on it as well.
- I believe this is the model you designed for a "popular
whistle teacher"--I'm gonna guess Bill Ochs?--you did good. I hope he does give you
an endorsement for it--your fine work merits it, in my opinion.
